Steven Moffat has been nominated in the Best Writer category at the BAFTA Craft Awards for his work on Doctor Who, it has been announced. The British Academy of Film and Television Arts will be hosting the ceremony on May 11th. The awards honour those who work behind-the-scenes in the television industry, and composer Murray Gold is also nominated for his work on Doctor Who.

Moffat's competition consists of Jimmy McGovern (for The Street), Tony Marchant (The Mark of Cain) and Heidi Thomas (Cranford). Doctor Who also receives nominations in the categories of Interactive Fiction Contribution, Sound (Fiction / Entertainment) and Visual Effects.

The BBC has confirmed that Episode One of Series Four, Partners in Crime, will be broadcast at 6.20pm on Saturday 5th April. The episode will be followed by an edition of Confidential on BBC3 at 7.05pm and will be repeated on BBC3 on Sunday 6th.

Saturday 5th is also when BBC Four will be screening a tribute night to Doctor Who's first producer, Verity Lambert. The evening will include three episodes of classic Doctor Who.

TV REVIEW Doctor Who 4.01 "Partners in Crime"

The One Where: Series four opens with Donna Noble (Catherine Tate’s character from “The Runaway Bride”) searching for The Doctor – and finding him, as he investigates a diet pill that causes people’s fat to literally walk off them.
Verdict: It’s a fast-paced romp of an episode, one of Davies’ family-pleasing scene setters, and the enjoyable surprise is: Tate is brilliant. She slots right into the role of the Doctor’s new "mate" with ease, and she also delivers instances of genuine humour. I love the moment when they see each other across a room where the villains are holed up, oblivious to the fact they’ve been spotted. And there’s a good gag about the Doctor wearing the same suit. But the humour is forced in places: when Foster the super-nanny plunges to her death, it’s a pure Wile E Coyote cartoon fall. This episode is fun, but it doesn’t have the wow factor of last year’s “Smith and Jones” opener.
Influences: The alien mothership resembles the classic saucer out of Close Encounters, and makes an unearthly honking sound like the invaders from the recent War of the Worlds remake.
LMAO: “You’re a journalist? Well just make it up then,” the Doctor tells an investigative reporter. That’s us told.
Speculation: What is the Shadow Proclamation to which the Doctor refers? The only other time we’ve heard of this was in the first episode of the Christopher Eccleston series. Does it refer to a treaty of galactic law drawn up after the Time War? I suspect we’ll hear more of this.
Trivia: The alien method of reproduction is described as “parthenogenesis”. It means asexual reproduction, where offspring simply split away from their parent; it occurs naturally in some species of plants and animals in the wild.
Cool FX: The cute alien babies were made with crowd-generating Massive FX technology, originally designed for the Lord of the Rings movies. This represents the technology’s TV debut.

Ik ook maar de laatste keer duurde dat nog 1 1/2 jaar na de release van de single disks. En deze disks van seizoen 2 zijn nog steeds enkel gezien door 1 persoon. Op de DW fora in NL is deze release onbekend evenals de volgende releases van Davison & T. Baker.

Of deze persoon heeft gelijk en Memphis Belle heeft een release stijl die absoluut anti verkoop is en meer gericht is op het niet verkopen van een product.

Richard Dawkins in Doctor Who

Professor Richard Dawkins, the celebrated biologist and writer, is to appear as himself later in the current series of Doctor Who. Executive Producer Russell T Davies made the announcement in an interview with the Independent on Sunday. He said the show's crew were delighted to see Dawkins on set: "People were falling at his feet ... We've had Kylie Minogue on that set, but it was Dawkins people were worshipping."

Dawkins is the author of many best-selling non-fiction works, from The Selfish Gene and The Blind Watchmaker to The God Delusion, and is a powerful communicator of both Darwin's evolutionary theory and the merits of atheism.

He holds the Charles Simonyi Chair for the Public Understanding of Science at the University of Oxford, and is a Fellow of the Royal Society, though he is perhaps equally well known amongst some Doctor Who fans as the husband of Lalla Ward, who played former companion Romana! He was also a close friend of former script editor Douglas Adams, to whom he dedicated The God Delusion

4x 03 Planet of the Ood

The British Board of Film Classification has indicated that forthcoming episode Planet of the Ood is not as suitable for youngsters as others are by giving it a 12 rating for its DVD release.

The BBFC's consumer advice says the story contains a moderate gory moment.

It will be the third episode of the first three from Series Four on the DVD, which is due to be released in the UK on June 2. The preceding two episodes, Partners In Crime and The Fires of Pompeii, have each been given a PG rating.

While both Partners In Crime and The Fires of Pompeii have running times in excess of 48 minutes, Planet of the Ood clocks in at 43 minutes and 38 seconds.

TV REVIEW Doctor Who 4.02 “The Fires of Pompeii”

The One Where: Our chums visit Pompeii the day before the volcano explodes, but the Doctor won't help Donna save the people of the city because it's a fixed point in time… until it emerges that a cult of soothsayers, working for alien Pyrophiles, is actually threatening the whole world.

Verdict: Just as last series kicked off with a comedy episode then went straight into something sumptuous and historical, so this series follows suit: after the light touch of "Partners in Crime", we find ourselves whisked off to ancient Roman times. It looks amazing, and the story is a meaty one with an opportunity for Donna to weep… and provide the first real, angry challenge the Doctor has had to his authority. Tate is proving that she can be strong as the Doctor's conscience. The running gag about her being heard as Welsh whenever she speaks Latin is played well, it's cute that the TARDIS is built into the Sibylline prophesies, and I like the asides about the burden of the Time Lords (that they can see what can't be altered in time).
The Shadow Proclamation has now been mentioned twice this series now… hmm. The CGI on the Centurion-like Pyrophiles is stunning!

Prophecies: The Sibylline prophetess tells Donna she has something on her back, and then tells the Doctor that "she is returning" (presumably Rose). She mentions the Cascade of Medusa (the Doctor spoke about sealing the rift at the Medusa Cascade last series).

Whoniverse: There is a reference to the 1965 William Hartnell adventure "The Romans", when the Doctor says he had nothing to do with the fire of Rome ("Well, not much").

Did you spot?: The Roman family's names are taken from the family Caecillius who appeared in Latin O-Level textbooks!

Trivia: The eruption of Vesuvius depicted in this episode is dated to 24 August AD 79. There are a number of Sibylline traditions in Roman mythology (it just means "prophetess") but the earliest Sibylline texts are thought to date from the 6th century BC.

TV REVIEW Doctor Who 4.03 “Planet of the Ood”

The One Where:
The Ood go on a killing spree at a distribution depot on their homeworld. Donna and the Doctor soon realise that the second great and bountiful human empire is endorsing slavery...

Verdict:
A welcome return for the “live to serve” Ood (from “The Impossible Planet”/”The Satan Pit” two-parter), who still have the ability to switch from sweet to scary in the flash of a glowing red eye. Tim McInnerny is suitably slimy as the businessman making a packet exploiting the Ood and their native Ood-Sphere (a beautifully realised iceworld), but the real baddie turns out to be a 42nd century human race that’s happy to subjugate (via lobotomy) an entire species just so they don’t have to do the jobs they hate – a surprisingly political sting in the tail. Plenty of good stuff from Donna, too, who continues to do her best take on Jiminy Cricket as the Doctor’s conscience.

Trivia:
“Voice of the Ood” Silas Carson also lent his vocal cords to several aliens in the Star Wars prequels, notably the Trade Federation’s Nute Gunray.
Whoniverse:
Sorry, but Mr Halpen (McInnerny) turning into an Ood is totally inconsistent with the rest of the episode. Has someone read Roald Dahl’s “Royal Jelly”?

Speculation 1:
Donna mentions AWOL bees for a second time. What’s going on? Could their disappearance have anything to do with the Shadow Proclamation and the missing planets mentioned in the first two episodes of the series?

Speculation 2:
Ood Sigma’s revelation that he thinks the Doctor’s “song must end soon” seems to take the Time Lord aback somewhat – what does Russell the T have in store for the Tenth Doctor?

Best Line:
Donna: “Now that’s what I call a spaceship. You’ve got a box, he’s got a Ferrari.”

Inderdaad wederom een excellente aflevering die ditmaal gaat over slavernij, ik heb mijn dochters het principe uitgelegd en die vonden het fout. Doctor Who blijft voor mij de enige echte goede scifi serie van dit moment.

De serie heeft pas de 4de aflevering getoond (v/d 13) en de fans zijn al bezig met de kerstspecial. Er is in het Whofandom veel vragen over een potentiele regeneratie van de Tennant Doctor in een volgende versie v/d Doctor. M.n. de schrijver en serie producer RTD is druk bezig allerlei hints te laten vallen. Oftewel hoe krijg je levenslange fans knettergek.:wink:

David Morrissey has been reunited with his Blackpool co-star David Tennant for this year's Doctor Who Christmas special.

According to a report by the Press Association, the pair appeared on set yesterday in the grounds of Gloucester Cathedral.

Further details are given in the spoiler box - which may contain information you do not want to know. The PA report - with pictures - was carried today by the Daily Mail. Again, do not click on the link if you want to remain spoiler-free. According to PA:

"College Green was covered with artificial snow for the scene filmed today, in which mourners in Victorian costume marched in front of a horse-drawn cart carrying a coffin.

"Tennant was dressed in the Doctor's trademark ankle-length brown coat, while Morrissey was kitted out in full period garb - a tan knee-length jacket and red waistcoat.

"A security guard sat in front of the Tardis, which was tucked down a nearby alleyway, covered by a white sheet.

"Tennant waved to the crowds as the crew prepared the intricate set and covered the surrounding historic buildings with fake snow.

"Secrecy surrounds the Christmas episode's storyline, but it's believed to feature the Cybermen - the Doctor's deadliest enemies."

Elsewhere, it has been reported that Dervla Kirwan is also in the special.

TV REVIEW Doctor Who 4.04 “The Sontaran Stratagem”

VERDICT
The biggest threat to Who’s continuing success is that some of its tropes become over-familiar, and while ATMOS is a neat idea, it does instantly recall similar schemes: the Archangel network in “The Sound of Drums”; the earpods in “Rise of the Cybermen”... Still, perhaps this is the kind of thing that fans notice, and casual viewers don’t.
Like “Daleks in Manhattan”, this is a script that joins the dots without making any radical imaginative leaps. But it still works, largely cos it delivers a massive, grin-inducing hit of nostalgia. It’s great to see UNIT back en masse, and the same is true of the Sontarans. Neill Gorton’s prosthetics look magnificent, and the script nails the shortarse spudheads’ slightly comic singlemindedness without diminishing them to the level of mere figures of fun.

BEST BIT
The emergence of the half-formed human body from the cloning tank: wonderfully macabre and sure to permeate thousands of children’s nightmares.

STAR TURN
I wish Bernard Cribbins was my grandad. Perhaps he would be willing to adopt?

IN-JOKES
The script winkingly acknowledges fandom’s “UNIT dating controversy” (the old show’s continuity is inconsistent on when the Third Doctor’s earthbound adventures were set) by saying he worked for UNIT “in the ‘70s... or was it the ‘80s?” . And the “weak thorax” line is a nod to 1973’s “The Time Warrior”.

SPECULATION
So, what are the Sontarans up to? Well, since Rattigan’s lab contained experiments to do with terraforming, I’m guessing that the gas isn’t poisonous, and is part of a scheme to make Earth more suitable for Sontaran habitation? Although they don’t seem to have any major problems breathing in the air... Maybe they’re going to turn the planet into one massive cloning pool?

NITPICKS
“400 million cars” has to be the daftest of all the “things that can deadlock-sealed” yet! (Are even the windows deadlock-sealed?!) And it takes an age for Donna’s grandad to conk out. Has he got a respiratory bypass system?

BEST LINES
Rattigan: “If only that was possible.”
The Doctor: “If only that were possible. Conditional clause.”

Wederom een zeer goede aflevering in seizoen 4 die naar het schijnt tot op heden vergeet teleur te stellen. Voor de fans van de nieuwe serie erg goed en ook de klassieke fans worden niet vergeten. Mijn dochters vonden het niets om een week te moeten wachten op de 2de helft van het verhaal. Verder goed entertainment.

En het meest vage is nog dat medewerkers bij Memphis Belle zelf niet eens weten dat ze Doctor Who serie 2 hebben uitgebracht. Dus ik vraag me nog steeds af hoe Mediamarkt Enschede dan in gods naam hieraan komt! Ze zijn wel officieel dat is wel duidelijk, en het is ook een Nederlandse uitgave. Maar het blijft zoals chimera al zegt maar raar.
