Universal Pictures Chairman Adam Fogelson and Co-Chairman Donna Langley—along with Jeff Gaspin, Chairman, NBC Universal Television Entertainment and Angela Bromstad, President, Primetime Entertainment, NBC & Universal Media Studios—today announced that Universal Pictures and NBC Universal Television Entertainment have acquired the rights to produce three films and a television series based on the seven epic novels, short stories and comic books from Stephen King's The Dark Tower.

Ron Howard will direct the first film and the first season of television, which will be written by Akiva Goldsman. Goldsman will produce the film through his Weed Road Pictures with Howard and Grazer for Imagine Entertainment. Howard, Grazer and Goldsman will executive produce the television series for Universal Media Studios. Kerry Foster will executive produce the first film for Weed Road Pictures along with Todd Hallowell and Erica Huggins for Imagine Entertainment.

"I've been waiting for the right team to bring the characters and stories in these books to film and TV viewers around the world," said King. "Ron, Akiva, Brian along with Universal and NBC have a deep interest and passion for the 'The Dark Tower' series and I know that will translate into an intriguing series of films and TV shows that respect the origins and the characters in 'The Dark Tower' that fans have come to love."

"The Dark Tower" is Stephen King's opus of seven bestselling novels with, to date, more than 30 million copies sold in 40 countries. The novels incorporate themes from multiple genres including fantasy, science fiction, horror and adventure. After the series was completed, a prequel of comic books based on one of the characters was also published.

"Building a franchise home for 'The Dark Tower' is an exciting opportunity for this studio, and we're thrilled that Stephen has entrusted us to bring his beloved novels to the big screen," said Fogelson.

"Stephen King is a brilliant storyteller who creates imaginary worlds that resonate with the broadest audiences across ages and demographics," said Gaspin. "We are thrilled to partner with our colleagues in the film division and Brian, Ron and Akiva to bring Stephen's vision to the largest audience possible through this innovative multi-platform collaboration."

Howard, Grazer and Goldsman are planning for the first film in the trilogy to be immediately followed by a television series that will bridge the second film. After the second film, the television series will pick up allowing viewers to explore the adventures of the protagonist as a young man as a bridge to the third film and beyond.

"We are excited to have found partners at Universal who understand and embrace our approach to King's remarkable epic," said Howard. "By using both the scope and scale of theatrical filmmaking and the intimacy of television we hope to more comprehensively do justice to the characters, themes and amazing sequences King has given us in 'The Dark Tower' novels. Viggo Mortensen als 'gunslinger'

Regisseur Ron Howard overweegt Viggo Mortensen voor de hoofdrol in The Dark Tower. De acteur is in de running voor revolverheld Roland Deschain in de verfilming van de fantasy-reeks van Stephen King. Dat zegt Howard tegen de Amerikaanse krant Los Angeles Times.

Ook Daniel Craig, Hugh Jackman en Jon Hamm zouden kandidaten zijn. Mortensen staat echter met stip op één bij de fans. "Die namen staan inderdaad op de shortlist, maar op de Dark Tower-fansites is het Viggo wat de klok slaat", vertelt Howard.

Het is nog even afwachten voor wie Howard uiteindelijk kiest. De eerste film, waarschijnlijk gebaseerd op het eerste boek The Dark Tower: The Gunslinger, staat gepland voor 2012. De volgende twee films worden in de twee à drie jaar daarna gemaakt. Ook gaat Howard een aansluitende tv-serie maken, waarvan hij het eerste seizoen regisseert.

The Dark Tower is met zeven delen en een achtste in de maak de meest ambitieuze boekenserie die King ooit heeft geschreven. De serie omvat zijn gehele carrière, met elementen van fantasy, sciencefiction, spaghetti-western en kwade supercomputers. In het zesde boek heeft King zelf een gastoptreden.

Ik ben hier echt heel erg benieuwd naar. Ik ben al jaren een groot Stephen King-fan, en The Dark Tower is toch zeker wel één van mijn favorieten die in mijn boekenkast staat. Maar nou ben ik nooit heel erg gecharmeerd geweest van de verfilmingen van zijn boeken. Op een paar na, vond ik ze eigenlijk allemaal gewoon slecht. Ik hoop dan ook echt dat ze de boeken in ere houden en zo veel mogelijk van het verhaal in de films gaan verwerken.
En Viggo Mortensen als Roland? Ik zie het misschien wel voor me. Zijn personage Frank Hopkins uit Hidalgo ziet er wel een beetje uit zoals Roland in de boeken omschreven wordt. De beste voor de rol zou natuurlijk Clint Eastwood zijn, aangezien Roland weer voor een groot deel op hem gebaseerd is, maar jammer genoeg is hij nu gewoon te oud om de rol te spelen.

Ik zie persoonlijk Clint Eastwood ook niet echt voor me, maar goed. Als Stephen King dat echt had gewild, had 'ie de serie eerder af moeten maken .

Klopt inderdaad dat King Clint Eastwood al voorbeeld heeft gebruikt toen hij ik weet niet hoeveel jaar geleden begon aan de Donkere Toren reeks, wil natuurlijk ook niet zeggen dat hij de hoofdrol moet gaan vertolken. Moet zeggen dat Mortensen dichterbij het beeld komt wat ik van Roland heb dan Clint Eastwood (in de huidige situatie).

In 1982 werd het eerste boek uitgegeven, maar het verhaal zat al langer in z'n hoofd, als ik me niet vergis. Volgens mij was Eastwood zelfs toen al te oud, maar goed. Viggo Mortensen vind ik een goede keuze.

Ook een prima optie! Zou wel jammer zijn trouwens als er inderdaad een andere acteur komt voor de serie.... voor een deel van het verhaal kan ik het me goed voorstellen, gezien dat over de jeugd van Roland gaat, maar hopelijk niet voor de hele serie...

Ik zie, denk ik, momenteel toch het liefst Viggo Mortensen als Roland. Niet dat ik Javier Bardem niks vind, maar Roland werd nou niet omschreven als iemand met een Spaans uiterlijk. Maar degene die hem gaat spelen moet idd zowel in de film, als in de serie gaan spelen. Anders krijg je toch zo'n gevoel dat het los staat van elkaar.
En Stephen King heeft The Gunslinger trouwens geschreven toen hij 19 was, en nog studeerde. Het boek is alleen niet eerder uitgegeven dan in 1982. Dat betekent dus dat hij het verhaal in 1966 heeft geschreven, en toen was Clint Eastwood 36 jaar oud. Zo oud was ie toen dus nog niet.

Javier Bardem Hefting Dark Tower's Guns
He's closing a deal to star

He’s been connected to the part for a couple of months now, but it finally looks like Javier Bardem is spilling ink on a contract to play gunslinger Roland Deschain in Ron Howard’s ambitious, multi-faceted adaptation of Stephen King’s Dark Tower series.
After being the top choice for Howard and collaborators Akiva Goldsman and Brian Grazer, Bardem’s been through the usual casting tango – including a stage where Grazer told the world that the actor was “psychologically locked in” (OK, Brian… time to go lie down in a darkened room). Now, according to Deadline, Bardem’s so close to being on board that Howard has started the process of finding other cast members based on Bardem being Deschain.
And it’s not exactly your average job: Howard and his team are planning a trilogy of films plus a TV series that will run between the second and third cinematic outings and work as a prequel to the story. Bardem’s deal apparently includes an agreement to star in the first movie and options for the two other movies, getting paid a nice chunk of change to commit to everything. Well, he and Penelope Cruz have just had a child together… He could probably use the cash.

Het blijft jammer, het totale epos is 7 ( flinke ) boeken, en dat moet in 3 films en een serie over de prequel gestopt worden. Er vanuit gaande dat je het prequel verhaal redelijk kunt uitwerken in de serie betekent dat dus 6 boeken in drie films. Ik vrees weer dat er een hoop inhoud verloren gaat, hopelijk weet Ron Howard er wat van te maken.

It was one of Hollywood's most ambitious projects in recent memory: Universal and filmmaker Ron Howard adapting Stephen King's sprawling saga of THE DARK TOWER into three features, each bridged by a TV miniseries.

You'll note the past tense. That's because Universal has opted against the epic project, leaving Howard and manga-haired producing partner Brian Grazer seeking some alternate real estate to build their Dark Tower.

It's not really a shocking development -- last we heard, the studio was figuring out how to scale things back, potentially carving out the TV parts, making the movies (or everything) back-to-back, or starting with one to see how it performs. So the news of them giving the plug one good final tug was perhaps inevitable. (After all, that kind of big budget money could be spent on other valuable properties like a $200 million BATTLESHIP movie or something.)

That doesn't mean the Gunslinger is firing blanks, though -- Deadline says Warner Bros. is a potential home for Howard and company to bring the project (WB did just put up the towering stack of bucks for two HOBBIT movies).

The vast "Dark Tower" tale, spread across (so far) seven fat books, a short story and a Marvel Comics series, follows knightly Roland Deschain and his companions as they travel a crumbling magical realm seeking the Man in Black and the structure of the title.

Volgens Deadline zijn Warner Brothers en HBO bezig zijn het project binnen te halen. Warner Brothers uiteraard voor de films en HBO voor de tv serie.

Producenten Ron Howard en Brian Grazer zijn weer terug bij af; Warner Bros doet niet meer mee. Hetgeen betekent dat HBO waarschijnlijk ook afhaakt.

Jammer, wellicht na Game of Thrones een leuke opvolger voor HBO om dan alsnog op te pakken. Stof genoeg, maar wederom een duur project.

Er is al weer sprake van een mogelijke nieuwe geldschieter. De Media Capital Group heeft interesse getoond. MCG heeft recent nog Seth MacFarlanes Ted gefinancierd en heeft Neill Blomkamps Elysium nog in productie.
MCG heeft in principe de beschikking over genoeg kapitaal om een dergelijk project te financieren en een van de mannen achter de firma schijnt ook een groot Stephen King-fan te zijn. Er zou daarom snel sprake kunnen zijn van een deal.

Ironisch genoeg heeft MCG een distributieovereenkomst met Universal, de filmmaatschappij die in eerste instantie bezig was met het project en vervolgens heeft besloten het risico niet te nemen.

Ik ken de boekenreeks niet maar de trailer ziet er wel goed uit. Ziet erg erg sfeervol uit!
