Dit topic gaat over films die speciaal voor de home entertainment-branche geproduceerd worden. Ofwel, films die de bioscopen nooit halen en gelijk op DVD uitgebracht worden.

Het zijn vooral sequels die op deze markt z'n première beleven, waarvan de meeste uit de Disney-stal komen. En er gaan geruchten dat Warner titels als The Goonies 2, Gremlins 3, The Lost Boys 2 en New Jack City 2 in de planning heeft staan.

Jaws 5 going direct to DVD

Universal Home Entertainment are prepping a fifth JAWS movie as one of their direct-to-dvd premieres. The studio wants to go head to head with Warner's DEEP BLUE SEA 2, which is also going direct to dvd, and also centres on killer sharks. One idea that has been suggested to the studio for JAWS 5 is that they completely forget about what happened in JAWS 3 and JAWS 4 and again have Roy Scheider's character, Brody, returning to do battle. Since Scheider isn't keen on doing any more JAWS film, it'll take some tough negotiations. At present, the only returning element of the series is..... yep, you guessed it, John Williams' iconic music score.

Tja waar maken ze tegenwoordig geen vervolg op he.

Of ze pakken het slim aan en maken een ECHT goede Jaws film, met een goede schrijver, regisseur en fx team. Vervolgens noem je de film Jaws 2 en doe je net of 2 3 en 4 nooit gemaakt zijn. Hoewel ik wel een klein zwak heb voor deel 3, vind het zo tof in dat pretpark, maarja dan ga je wel de concurrentie met Deep Blue Sea 2 goed aan en volgens mij zit er nog best goede potentie in het concept.

En gremlins 3 direct to dvd? Gremlins zijn geweldige films, maak dan ook gewoon een fatsoenlijke bioscoopfilm er van. Zelfde voor de Goonies.

Maar weinig films lenen zich naar mijn mening voor een vervolg, met name qua verhaal, en Goonies en Deep Blue Sea horen daar zeker niet bij

Wat ik een groot nadeel vind bij de 'straight-to-dvd' vervolgen is dat het budget voor deze produktie vaak een paar cijfers minder tellen...
En dit is helaas ook vaak te zien....

(ik zit bijv. aan Species 3 te denken...)

Van stargate gaan ze nu ook films maken die direkt op dvd uitkomen. Dat dat ipv een seizoen 11. Kijk, dat vind ik dan wel weer goed.

Direct-to-DVD Shockers

With profits from direct-to-DVD premieres hitting an all-time high, the Hollywood studios are ramping up production on new installments of some horror franchises. Warner Home Video's Warner Premiere division and producer Joel Silver plan to release Return to House on Haunted Hill later this year, while the studio's "Raw Feed" brand line continues with The Believers, written and directed by Blair Witch Project co-creater Dan Myrick and starring Daniel Benzali as the leader of a dangerous cult. Over at 20th Century Fox, Wrong Turn 2: Dead End - starring Henry Rollins - and Lake Placid 2 are in the final stages of post-production and should street later in 2007.

DVD premieres based on already-established brands require less promotional costs and have smaller budgets than most theatrical movies, but their sales rival bigger DVD releases. To further boost revenue, retailers and studios are building campaigns that can drive both current and older installments of the franchises.

Here are the latest direct-to-DVD productions that are in the pipeline from the studios. Look for the 20th Century Fox sequels Wrong Turn 2: Dead End in October, Bachelor Party 2, Garfield Gets Real and Lake Placid 2 (a team-up production of Sony and Fox) follow in early 2008.

MGM Home Entertainment resurrects the Stargate TV series with the films Stargate: The Ark of Truth and Stargate: Continuum. Over at New Line Home Entertainment, the studio has the greatly titled Flight of the Living Dead: Outbreak On a Plane due in October, along with sequels lined up for 8 Seconds, Cellular, Friday, Havoc, The Players Club and Undisputed.

Bring It On: In It To Win It and Monkey On The Run (a sequel to "Curious George") are now in production at Universal. Warner Home Video expects Return To House On Haunted Hill and A Dennis The Menace Christmas by the end of 2007, with The Lost Boys 2 and Get Smarter: Bruce and Lloyd Out Of Control due by Summer 2008. And finally, Disney is in production on the CG-animated "Peter Pan" sequel Tinkerbell for a Fall 2008 release.

EXCL: First Lost Boys 2 Casting News!


Our last report on Warner Bros.' long-mooted The Lost Boys 2 was a mawkish affair. As it turns out, the on-air wetworks was merely a display of crocodile tears.

ShockTillYouDrop.com has exclusively learned from an anonymous source that the vampire-slayin' Frog Bros. - Feldman and Jamison Newlander - are indeed returning for the next "Lost" adventure...and so is Corey Haim, reprising his role as Sam Emerson.

Lensing begins, with P.J. Pesce (From Dusk Till Dawn 3) at the helm, a week from Monday.

On the newcomer tip, we've also been informed Angus Sutherland - Keifer's half-brother (and son of Donald Sutherland and Francine Racette) - will star as this film's big bad vamp.

Tad Hilgenbrink (next seen in the upcoming Amusement) and Autumn Reeser ("The O.C.") have been cast as the leads.

Warner's Lost Boys 2 Synopsis


Warner Premiere has released, via a press release, the official synopsis for their upcoming direct-to-DVD sequel The Lost Boys 2.

The sequel takes us to the shady surf city of Luna Bay, California, where vampires quickly dispatch anyone who crosses their path. Into this dark world arrive Chris Emerson (Tad Hilgenbrink) and his younger sister, Nicole (Autumn Reeser). Having just lost their parents in a car accident, the siblings move in with their eccentric Aunt Jillian and become new prey for the locals’ way of life. When Nicole unwittingly falls for a local vampire, Chris must locate and destroy the gang’s lifeline before his sister’s transformation is complete; to do this Chris finds himself relying on the expertise of none other than Edgar Frog (Corey Feldman). Subtle references to characters from the original film, and cameos from returning actors offer homage to the Lost Boys legend and set a sinister tone of impending doom.

Said press release also reiterated what we first confirmed for you here regarding Corey Haim's non-involvement.

Says Feldman in the release, "I am truly excited to be on board for this sequel. After reading the latest script I genuinely believe we can deliver a sequel the fans can sink their teeth into. I also commend Warner Premiere on their choice to include Jamison Newlander. Edgar Frog has been laying in wait for 20 years to stake some more vampires and that is exactly what he intends to do with his brother Alan by his side."

In further casting news, Moviehole reports actress Moneca Delain (Trick 'r Treat) is a new addition to the film.

Niet akkoord. Wat is er eigenlijk mis met het concept van een remake? Op het toneel braakt men al twee eeuwen lang opnieuw Shakespeare uit, zij het telkens weer op een iets andere manier. Hetzelfde in de muziekwereld: een cover van een bekende hit heeft net zo goed weer het potentieel een hit te worden. Waarom zou een remake van een film dan niet mogen? Oké, er zijn misstappen begaan, maar er zijn ook goeie remakes (ik noem The Ring, The Hills Have Eyes, The Departed (zelfs een Oscar waard!), King Kong (ondanks zijn langdradigheid toch een oerdegelijke remake), ...). Ik heb het echter veel minder meegemaakt dat vervolgdelen of prequels op echt al wat oudere films nog goed kunnen zijn (ik noem Superman Returns, Star Wars I en II, enzovoort en zo verder).

Dus als je mij liet kiezen na vijftien jaar tussen ofwel een remake, ofwel een vervolg, dan weet ik het wel...

Is het niet zo dat deze films wel degelijk gemaakt worden met het doel de bios te halen vraag ik me af.
Alleen halen ze hem op de een of andere manier toch niet. Zo heb ik absolute toppers voorbij zien komen die echter nooit in de bios draaiden.

Er is tegenwoordig echt wel een markt van films die specifiek gemaakt worden om meteen op DVD uit te komen. Grote studio's hebben daar zelfs een aparte afdeling voor (meestal om direct-to-dvd sequels uit te brengen van films uit hun catalogus).

Maar natuurlijk zijn er ook films die wegens omstandigheden of een slechte bioscoop-opening in de VS bij ons meteen op DVD verschijnen, maar niet specifiek als direct-to-dvd titel zijn ontwikkeld.
