Countryster Kitty Wells (92) overleden



De eerste grote vrouwelijke countryster, Kitty Wells, is gisteren overleden. Dat heeft haar familie bekendgemaakt. De zangeres, die hits scoorde met Making Believe, The Things I Might Have Been en Release Me, overleed na een beroerte. Ze is 92 jaar oud geworden.

Wells' It Wasn't God Who Made Honky Tonk Angels uit 1952 was de eerste nummer 1-hit van een solozangeres in de countrymuziek. Ze zou zo'n vijftig albums opnemen, 25 top 10-hits zingen en een aantal wereldtournees maken. Vanaf 1953 stond ze vijftien jaar bovenaan de lijst van beste countryzangeressen.

De solozangcarrière van Wells begon in 1952 en duurde twee decennia. De zangeres was toen al vanaf het einde van de jaren dertig bezig met concerttournees. In 2000 kondigde ze aan te stoppen. Daarna trad ze af en toe nog op in Nashville, Tennessee, en op andere plekken.

De zangeres werd meerdere keren bekroond. Zo werd ze opgenomen in de Country Music Hall of Fame en kreeg ze de Pioneer Award van de Academy of Country Music. In 1991 werd ze door de bredere muziekindustrie erkend met de Lifetime Achievement Award van de National Academy of Record Arts & Sciences.

Simon Ward overleden



Na een lange tijd ziek geweest te zijn is de Britse acteur Simon Ward overleden. Zijn agent meldt dat Ward vredig is gestorven, in het bijzijn van zijn familie. De acteur, die kort geleden nog te zien was in de serie The Tudors, is 70 jaar geworden.

Ward beleefde in 1972 zijn doorbraak met zijn rol als Winston Churchill in de film Young Winston. Hij werd hiervoor zelfs genomineerd voor een Golden Globe.

Acteur All in the family overleden



De Amerikaanse acteur Sherman Hemsley is dinsdag op 74-jarige leeftijd overleden in El Paso in Texas. Dat meldde de lokale politie dinsdag.

Hemsley is in Nederland vooral bekend van zijn rol in All in the family, als de buurman van Archie Bunker. In Amerika verwierf hij de grootste bekendheid met de spin-off van All in the family, The Jeffersons.

Dat is een van de langstlopende televisieseries in de Verenigde Staten met alleen Afro-Amerikanen in de hoofdrol. De serie behandelde thema's als racisme en sociale klasse. Zo had het karakter van Hemsley grote moeite met het gemengde huwelijk van de schoonouders van zijn zoon.

Ook speelde Hemsley in The fresh prince of Bel-Air.

Arbiter WK-finale 74 overleden

Voormalig scheidsrechter Jack Taylor is overleden. De arbiter floot de WK-finale van 1974 tussen Nederland en Duitsland (1-2) waarin hij beide ploegen een penalty gaf. De Engelsman stierf op 82-jarige leeftijd, meldt Sky Sports.



Taylor leidde in zijn 33-jarig durende loopbaan ruim duizend wedstrijd. De arbiter maakte zich in 1974 niet geliefd in Nederland omdat aan de penalty van Duitsland een 'Schwalbe' van Bernd Hölzenbein vooraf zou zijn gegaan.

Geoffrey 'Onslow' Hughes overleden



De Britse acteur Geoffrey Hughes is vrijdag op 68-jarige leeftijd overleden. Dit meldden Britse media zaterdag.

Hughes verwierf in Nederland vooral bekendheid door zijn rol in de BBC-serie Keeping Up Appearances (Schone Schijn).

Hij speelt daarin de rol van de onverzorgde werkloze Onslow, die veel tijd bier drinkend en in ondergoed voor de tv doorbrengt in een aftands huis. Dit tot grote schaamte van zijn bekakte schoonzuster, Hyacinth Bucket, de hoofdpersoon van de komische serie.

Coronation Street

Hughes overleed na een lange strijd tegen kanker vreedzaam in zijn slaap. In het Verenigd Koninkrijk was hij vooral bekend door zijn rol in Coronation Street, een soap die al meer dan 50 jaar op de Britse televisie te zien is. Ook was hij de stem van Paul McCartney in de Beatles-film The Yellow Submarine.

Hughes woonde op het grootste Engelse eiland, Isle of Wight. Daar vervulde hij de functie van plaatsvervangend Lord Lieutenant, die bij officiële gelegenheden de band van het eiland met het Britse koningshuis symboliseert, aldus de BBC.

Acteur Norman Alden overleden



De Amerikaanse acteur Norman Alden is op 87-jarige leeftijd overleden. Hij stief vrijdag in zijn woonplaats Los Angeles. We kennen de acteur voornamelijk uit films als Jerrold Freedmans Kansas City Bomber, Robert Zemeckis' Back to the Future en Tim Burtons Ed Wood.

Aldens loopbaan ging in 1957 van start. Naast de films waarin hij speelde was hij te zien in talloze tv-series, tv-films en reclames. Hij zou in totaal zo'n 2500 rollen gespeeld hebben. Alden stopte ermee toen hij 82 jaar werd.

De acteur ging in 2006 met pensioen op 82-jarige leeftijd. Hij laat zijn vrouw Sharon Hayden, twee kinderen en kleinkind achter.

Zanger Tony Martin (98) overleden



De Amerikaanse zanger Tony Martin is zondag in zijn huis in Los Angeles op 98-jarige leeftijd overleden. Dat meldden Amerikaanse media maandag.

Martin begon zijn carrière in de jaren 30 als acteur/zanger in Hollywood-musicals. Hij maakte diverse platen en scoorde hits met onder meer I Get Ideas, To Each His Own, Begin the Beguine and There's No Tomorrow.

Met zijn warme bariton had hij een bijzondere aantrekkingskracht op het vrouwelijk publiek.

Spanish actor Sancho Gracia died Wednesday night in Madrid at the age of 75 due to complications from lung cancer, according to the actor's sister, Lucy Gracia.

The actor died on 11.50 p.m. at Chiron Clinic, accompanied by his wife, his three children, his sister and niece. The family is very distressed said his sister, despite his illness, he underwent surgery for a small tumor in the lung in 2001 and we did not expect an ending so quickly.

Remembered for "Curro Jiménez"

Sancho Gracia will always be remembered for giving life to the popular outlaw of the 1976-1978 TV series, “Curro Jiménez” accompanied by El Algarrobo, played by Alvaro de Luna, The Student, played by José Sancho, El Fraile, played by Francisco Algora, and the Gypsy, by Eduardo Garcia. The series was set in the South of Spain in the 19th Century, this successful TV series featured the endless adventures of Curro Jiménez (prototype of the Andalusian "bandolero"), a kind of Spanish Robin Hood, and his gang, the two main members of which were El Estudiante and El Algarrobo. The plot changed in every episode, having in common the theme of the legendary bandit, fair, brave and good-natured, who leads the guerrilla against the French troops during the Spanish War of Independence; there are love stories, fight against injustice and even some comedic episodes

An extensive acting career

The Madrid actor also starred in, among others, “Montoyas y Tarantos” (1989), Vicente Escrivá, and “The Crime of Father Amaro” (2002), by Carlos Carrera, selected to represent Spain and Mexico, respectively, in the nominations for the Oscar.

He was nominated for a Goya in 2002 for Best Actor for his performance in the movie "800 Bullets".

Born in Madrid on September 27, 1936, the son of Felix Angel Sancho Gracia he spent his youth between the neighborhoods of Ambassadors and Lavapiés Madrid. Expelled from several schools because of its restlessness, he moved to Uruguay with his family in 1947, where he lived until 1964, after the death of his father and after his mother contracted a second marriage.

In Uruguay he held various and disparate work and became an actor after reading an advertisement in a newspaper. He was a student of Catalan actress Margarita Xirgu [1888-1969] at the Conservatory in Montevideo, where he studied three years and worked on productions of Blood Wedding, Lorca, and A Midsummer Night's Dream by William Shakespeare.

Extroverted, Sancho drew the attention of producers and soon became an actor in action movies, spaghetti westerns and comedies. He worked with such directors as Juan Antonio Bardem, James of Armiñán, Vicente Aranda, Mario Camus, Adolfo Aristarain, Alex de la Iglesia and José Luis Rope.

Sancho participated in over 125 films and TV appearances during his 45+ career. But it was on TV where he established himself as an actor and gained further popularity in series such as “Los camioneros” (1973-1974) and “Curro Jiménez” (1976-1978), which he was co-creator and in the sequel “Los camioneros” (1994), in which he portrayed the role of the bandit-hero, with Álvaro de Luna and Jose Sancho.

He then starred in the series for TVE “Black Mask” (1980) and in the summer of 1982 he starred as Juan Martín Díez 'The Stubborn', hero of the War of Independence in the Spanish-French coproduction ” Los desastres de la guerra”, the Mario Camus orders, together with Paco Rabal and Alvaro de Luna, and more recently “Central Operational Unit – UCO” (2009).

On TV he also played roles like Captain Piñero in “Simón Bolívar” (1969). He starred in Huidos. The Last Maquis (1992), which resulted in his first film as director following a disagreement with the initial project director.

Sancho Gracia combined theater, film and television, giving life to characters on stage as the Tenorio by José Zorrilla (1995), or Goya (1996) (Goya of Honor of the Spanish Association of Friends of Goya).

He was an honorary cultural attache in Uruguay in Spain from January 1991, by appointment of then-President Luis Alberto Lacalle, and was awarded by the Association of Critics of New York in February 2003 for his performance in the Mexican film The Crime of Father Amaro.

The International Festival of Peniscola Comedy Film, he was awarded the Honorary Calabuch an entire career that he gave Alex de la Iglesia in May 2003.

The actor married Aguirre Gomensoro Noelia, the daughter of a prominent politician of the National Party of Uruguay, on May 19, 1969, and had three children (Rodrigo, actor Rodolfo [1975- ] and Felix). His best man was Adolfo Suarez [1932- ], with whom he had a strong and lasting friendship.

Hij heeft hiervoor maarliefst drie keer de Oscar in ontvangst mogen nemen (voor z'n werk aan E.T., Alien en King Kong). Daarnaast heeft hij ook gewerkt aan de Special Effects voor films als Dune, Conan the Destroyer, Close Encounters of the Third Kind en Profondo Rosso.



Mooi stukje trivia over de beste man: Voor Lucio Fulci's A Lizard in a Woman's Skin waren de Special Effects zo overtuigend dat een scène met verminkte honden er bijna toe leidde dat de regisseur wegen dierenmishandeling naar de gevangenis werd gestuurd. Rambaldi heeft het kunstje in de rechtzaal moeten toelichten om de juryleden ervan te overtuigen dat het nep was.

Regisseur en producent Mel Stuart is op 83-jarige leeftijd overleden. Stuarts bekendste werk is ongetwijfeld Willy Wonka & The Chocolate Factory.



Stuart heeft ook een Oscar-nominatie op z'n naam, voor z'n documentaire Four Days in November, over de moord op president Kennedy.

Malcolm X acteur Albert Freeman Jr. overleden



Acteur Albert Freeman Jr. is op 78-jarige leeftijd overleden. Dat werd bevestigd door de Howard University in Washington, waar de acteur acteerlessen gaf. We kennen Freeman Jr. onder meer van zijn rol als Elijah Muhammad in Spike Lee's Malcolm X.

Een woordvoerder van de Howard University bracht het volgende naar buiten:

"Hij was een briljant professor, een gerenommeerd acteur en een geweldige regisseur die zijn sporen heeft verdiend in het klaslokaal, maar ook op het toneel, het witte doek en het televisiescherm. We zullen hem missen."

Het is nog niet bekend waaraan Freeman Jr. precies is overleden.

'Bassist Bob Birch mogelijk zelfmoord gepleegd'

Bob Birch, de bassist van onder andere Elton John en Billy Joel, is woensdag in de buurt van Los Angeles dood aangetroffen met een schotwond in zijn hoofd.



Vermoedelijk heeft de 56-jarige bassist zichzelf om het leven gebracht. Dat meldt TMZ.
Volgens de politie wordt de zaak behandeld als een zelfmoord, hoewel er geen afscheidsbriefje werd gevonden. Er zou evenmin sprake zijn van drugsgebruik. Vooralsnog zou volgens de politie alles wijzen op zelfdoding.

De 56-jarige Birch, die naast bas ook saxofoon speelde, werkte al sinds de begin jaren '90 met Elton John samen. Vervolgens speelde hij ook samen met andere bekende artiesten, zoals Billy Joel, Lionel Richie, George Michael, Eric Clapton, Tina Turner en Stevie Wonder.

Actress Phyllis Thaxter, Superman's Mom, Dies at 90



She played Ma Kent in the 1978 superhero film after appearing years earlier in such classics as “Thirty Seconds Over Tokyo” and “Act of Violence.”

Phyllis Thaxter, the wholesome actress who played Ma Kent in 1978’s Superman and the faithful girlfriend to vengeful POW Robert Ryan in the 1948 film noir classic Act of Violence, has died. She was 92.

Thaxter died Tuesday at her home in Orlando after a long bout with Alzheimer's, according to her daughter, actress Skye Aubrey.

A contract player at MGM and Warner Bros. in the 1940s and ’50s before her career was derailed by illness, Thaxter also starred in the psychological thriller Bewitched (1945), playing opposite Edmund Gwenn as a woman fighting to hold off a conniving, murderous alter ego.

“She was one of the most beautiful and patrician icons of the golden age of movies, TV and theater,” veteran movie critic Rex Reed told The Hollywood Reporter.

Born Nov. 20, 1919, in Portland, Maine, her mother was a former Shakespearean actress and her father a state Supreme Court justice. She joined the Montreal Repertory Theatre troupe as a teenager before graduating to Broadway.

Appearing in such productions as Claudia and the 1940 drama There Shall Be No Night -- whose cast included Alfred Lunt, Lynn Fontanne, Sydney Greenstreet and Montgomery Clift -- Thaxter attracted the attention of Hollywood and signed with MGM in the early '40s.

Her film debut came in Thirty Seconds Over Tokyo (1944) as the wife of Van Johnson. A year later, she starred in Bewitched and then appeared in Week-End at the Waldorf, a remake of the Greta Garbo classic Grand Hotel.

The hazel-eyed brunette followed with The Sea of Grass (1947), opposite Spencer Tracy and Katharine Hepburn; Tenth Avenue Angel (1948) with Margaret O’Brien; Blood on the Moon, a Western with Robert Mitchum; and Fred Zinneman’s taut Act of Violence (1948), as the woman who stands by Ryan, an embittered POW out for revenge against his former war buddy Van Heflin.

Thaxter then joined Warner Bros. and appeared in such films as Michael Curtiz'sThe Breaking Point (1950) with John Garfield and Patricia Neal; Come Fill the Cup (1951) with Gig Young; Springfield Rifle (1952) with Gary Cooper; another Curtiz film, Jim Thorpe — All-American (1951), with Burt Lancaster; and She’s Working Her Way Through College (1952) with Ronald Reagan.

However, she contracted a form of infantile paralysis while visiting her family in Portland, Maine, and her contract was terminated.
That led Thaxter to television, where she appeared in guest-starring roles in Lux Video Theatre, Climax!, Wagon Train, Rawhide, The Defenders, Medical Center, Marcus Welby, M.D. and many other series.

In 1978, Thaxter made one final movie splash when she was cast along with Glenn Ford as Clark Kent’s adoptive parents on Earth in Richard Donner’s Superman, starring Christopher Reeve. Her daughter Skye was married to Superman executive producer Iiya Salkind.

“I worked harder on that film than anything I’d done — I couldn’t be bad,” Thaxter once said.

The actress, who has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, spent the 1980s on the stage in such productions as The Little Foxes with Anne Baxter and The Gin Game with Larry Gates.

In 1944, Thaxter married James Aubrey Jr., who was president of CBS in the early 1960s and then was hired by Kirk Kerkorian to preside over MGM during a brutal budget-slashing period in the '70s. They divorced in 1962 (he died in 1994). Thaxter then wed former Princeton football star Gilbert Lea, a marriage that lasted for 46 years until his death in May 2008.

In addition to her daughter, survivors include grandchildren Devin, Jessica, Jackie, Anastasia and Sebastian and great-grandson Elijah.

Legendary Spanish film maker Joaquín Luis Romero Marchent died in Madrid on August 16, 2012. Ten days short of his 91stbirthday.

Joaquín Luis Romero Marchent was born in Madrid on August 26, 1921, and is part of a family of theater and film makers. His father was Joaquín Romero Marchent Gómez de Avellaneda, who founded and edited the magazine Radio Cinema which was published between 1938 and 1963, and was co-founder, with actor Rafael Duran, Intercontinental Films.

Their first release was “Juzgado permanente” a detective comedy (1953), and later “El hombre del paraguas blanco” one of the early co-productions with Italy. Joaquín’s influence and relevance grew with modesty in the Spanish film industry until he, along with his brothers, became giants in the film business.

His contribution to the Euro-western began with “El Coyote” (1955) and “Justice of the Coyote” (1955). These two films made back to back began a cultivation of the Western genre and opened the door for many of the European co-productions to come that were filmed in Spain, such as “A Fistful of Dollars” (1964). The actors he used in his production such Fernando Sancho opened the door for many Spanish actors to be cast in the roles of Mexicans.

Joaquín Luis Romero Marchent became his own producer and scriptwriter, and joined with Italian co-producer Alberto Grimaldi, who was just entering the field. He began a cycle of Spanish Euro-westerns beginning with “The Taste of Revenge” (1963) and “7 from Texas” (1964), two of the best westerns ever shot by a Spanish director, that customized generic production admirably, at the same offered physical and psychological stories, that during previous years had been made in Hollywood by directors like Anthony Mann, Budd Boetticher, Henry King and Robert Parrish, therefore, bridging the traditional view of the gender of Hollywood and the Spaghetti Western.

Other achievements were “7 Hours of Gunfire” (1964) an “Fedra West” (1967), working as co-producer, director and screenwriter on many of these films. During these years he worked with his brother Rafael, for example on “Garringo” (1969) and Italian directors, for instance on “I Want Him Dead” (1967) with Paolo Bianchini, “Kill Them All and Return Alone” (1969) with Enzo G. Castellari and “Arizona Returns” (1970) with Sergio Martino.

Joaquín Romero Marchent then drifted away from the Cinema, but did not completely abandon the Western. He worked on the TV series “Curro Jimenez”, and although it was a about a Spanish Robin Hood it contained the essence of the American Western. Joaquín Romero wrote and directed twelve chapters of “Curro Jimenez”, and participated in the creation, production and coordination. “Curro Jiménez” was one of the most popular series in every way, and was distributed in the five continents, Spanish TV in its history, enthroned the protagonists Sancho Gracia (who recently died), Alvaro de Luna and Jose Sancho.

AMSTERDAM - Top Gun regisseur Tony Scott, heeft zondagnacht zelfmoord gepleegd.

Dat bevestigt de Amerikaanse politie.
De 68-jarige Britse regisseur is van een brug in San Pedro, Californië gesprongen. In zijn auto is een afscheidsbrief gevonden.
Scott regisseerde films als Unstoppable, Top Gun en Crimson Tide. Daarnaast produceerde hij films en tv-series, waaronder Promotheus, The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford en The Good Wife.
