CriterionSony Pictures Home Entertainment and Criterion have announced that they have signed a distribution deal. As a result, Sony will be in charge with replication, distribution, and inventory management of all Criterion titles.

Following the announcement, Jonathan Turell, CEO of Criterion, said: "We're proud to release many great films from Sony's library in Criterion and very much look forward to continuing our long relationship. Tja, of je daar blij mee moet zijn? Ik weet niet direct om wat voor soort Sony-titels het zou kunnen gaan, maar de beperking tot regio A en de fikse prijs van de meeste Criterion-uitgaven zie ik toch wel als een nadeel.

Er zijn nog een hoop goede Sony films die Criterion kan uitbrengen. Ik hoop nu op lagere prijzen en dat de titels regio vrij worden. Op die manier zullen ze veel meer kopers erbij hebben.

Dus toch maar de Criterion besteld.
DVD Pacific heeft de Crit niet en bij Deepdiscount kost-ie 35 Euro.

Criterion Announces February Titles

The Criterion Collection has announced seven titles for Blu-ray release in February: On February 4th, the studio will release François Truffaut's Jules and Jim. On February 11th, it will release Abdellatif Kechiche's Blue is the Warmest Color. On February 18th, it will release Alfred Hitchcock's Foreign Correspondent and Wes Anderson's Fantastic Mr. Fox. And on February 25th, it will release Steven Soderbergh's King of the Hill and Roman Polanski's Tess. On the same date, Criterion will also rerelease Jean-Luc Godard's Breathless as a Dual Format Edition.

Foreign Correspondent



In 1940, Alfred Hitchcock made his official transition from the British film industry to Hollywood. And it was quite a year: his first two American movies, Rebecca and Foreign Correspondent, were both nominated for the best picture Oscar. Though Rebecca prevailed, Foreign Correspondent is the more quintessential Hitch film. A full-throttle espionage thriller, starring Joel McCrea as a green Yank reporter sent to Europe to get the scoop on the imminent war, it's wall-to-wall witty repartee, head-spinning plot twists, and brilliantly mounted suspense set pieces, including an ocean plane crash climax with astonishing special effects. Foreign Correspondent deserves to be mentioned alongside The 39 Steps and North by Northwest as one of the master's greatest adventures.

King of the Hill

Set in St. Louis during the Depression, King of the Hill follows the daily struggles of a resourceful and imaginative adolescent (Jesse Bradford) who, after his tubercular mother is sent to a sanatorium, must survive on his own in a run-down hotel during his salesman father's long business trips. This evocative period piece, faithfully adapted from the memoir by the novelist A. E. Hotchner, is among the ever versatile Soderbergh's most touching and surprising films.

Tess

There was before Breathless, and there was after Breathless. Eindelijk weer eens een sterke maand, zowel qua titels als covers. Eens kijken of ze de fout uit de dvd release van Jules et Jim wegwerken, fantastisch dat meer Hitchcock, Polanski en Anderson in de collectie komt. En mooi dat ze BITWC al uitbrengen, ben wel benieuwd naar die "full special edition"...

Qua extra's zal het wel niet 1 op 1 overeenkomen maar ach, tegenwoordig kijk ik lang niet meer alle extra's. En de extra's die op bovengenoemde uitgaves staan vindt ik ruim voldoende. Vooral Mr Fox kun je vinden in allerlei voordelige acties (3 voor 17 pond bij amazon).

Vindt het daarom interessanter als Criterion titels uitbrengt die (nog) niet in de UK uit zijn of een zichtbare verbetering (zoals The Devil's Backbone of Purple Noon). Om weer terug te komen op Mr Fox, de uitgave die er is...daar valt niets op aan te merken.

Vandaag binnen gekomen en inderdaad, een mooi digipack (met twee overbodige dvd's). Het boekje stelt werkelijk niets voor. De boekjes lijken wel steeds dunner te worden bij Criterion. Het boekje bij The Devil's Backbone mag geneens een boekje heten. Op dat vlak doet MoC het toch beter.
