Les cousins

SYNOPSIS

In Les cousins, Claude Chabrol crafts a sly moral fable about a provincial boy who comes to live with his sophisticated bohemian cousin in Paris. Through these seeming opposites, Chabrol conjures a piercing, darkly comic character study that questions notions of good and evil, love and jealousy, and success in the modern world. A mirror image of Le beau Serge, Chabrol’s debut, Les cousins recasts that film’s stars, Jean-Claude Brialy and Gérard Blain, in startlingly reversed roles. This dagger-sharp drama won the Golden Bear at the Berlin Film Festival and was an important precursor to the French New Wave.

The Phantom Carriage

SYNOPSIS

The last person to die on New Year’s Eve before the clock strikes twelve is doomed to take the reins of Death’s chariot and work tirelessly collecting fresh souls for the next year. So says the legend that drives The Phantom Carriage (Körkarlen), directed by the father of Swedish cinema, Victor Sjöström, about an alcoholic, abusive ne’er-do-well (Sjöström himself) who is shown the error of his ways and the pure-of-heart Salvation Army sister who believes in his redemption. Based on a novel by Nobel Prize winner Selma Lagerlöf, this extraordinarily rich and innovative silent classic (which inspired Ingmar Bergman to make movies) is a Dickensian ghost story and a deeply moving morality tale, as well as a showcase for groundbreaking special effects.

Carlos

Ugh, had eindelijk Dazed and Confused op DVD gekocht, wordt hij op BluRay uitgegeven.

Harakiri wordt bekijken of de MoC beter is. Kuroneko ben ik blij mee maar MoC is voor mij wel genoeg.

Tsja, ik ga nu ook twijfelen. De UK uitgave van Dazed & Confused staat in de preorder, en komt over een weekje uit.
De prijs is wat gunstiger dan de Criterion natuurlijk, maar als bijvoorbeeld het beeld een stuk minder is..... Het beeld van de HD-DVD was wel aardig. Zou Criterion een hele nieuwe transfer gaan maken?

Zeker, erg bijzondere film.

Leuk om te zien dat die Antonioni nu uitgegeven wordt, heb ik nogal prettige herinneringen aan toen ik hem een paar jaar terug in de bioscoop zag. Vooral omdat ik tijdens de film... laten we zeggen... seksuele gratificatie ontvangen heb. Gebeurt ook niet iedere dag.

Gelukkig gebeurde dat laatste niet tijdens Salo, dan zouden mensen hier toch anders tegen je aankijken.

Dat komt vooral omdat het toen wat drukker was in de bioscoop

Kwam op de site van Criterion Altman`s "Secret Honor" tegen. Is die de moeite waard voor iemand als ik die houdt van de Amerikaanse (politieke) geschiedenis?

Het duurt even voordat je erin zit. Een redelijke kennis van de Amerikaanse politiek tussen 1963-1975 is wel een pré. Wel een mooie karakterschets van een (fictieve?) Nixon.

Heb het merendeel van mijn bestelling binnen. Dat worden weer heerlijke maanden met Criterion en MoC!

Wel zo dom geweest om de DVD versies van Last Year in Marienbad en Sweet Smell of Success te bestellen ipv BR. Dazed and Confused wordt ook geBRd. Toch jammer dat de verpakking van de BRs "minder" is dan de oude. Gelukkig was Night of the Hunter wel die digipak verpakking.

Maar ja, gaat natuurlijk om de film en extras en niet de verpakking.
